Oct-9-08 01:49 pm
Washington, DC -- Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center has named Subha Madhavan, MS, PhD, as the first director of clinical research informatics and research assistant professor of oncology. Madhavan’s work occurs at the intersection of biomedical science and informatics. At Lombardi, she will coordinate informatics-related activities, bringing together existing databases and creating new infrastructure and analytic tools to establish the Georgetown Database of Cancer (G-DOC).

The G-DOC will be designed to marry clinical information from patients in clinical trials with molecular characteristics of their cancer. This effort will define the molecular features that underlie prognosis and responsiveness to therapy in patients, providing a basis for personalized medicine and a tool for target discovery and drug development.

Prior to joining Lombardi, Madhavan served as associate director at the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Biomedical Informatics and IT where she led the development of several bioinformatics programs including the platform supporting the REMBRANDT project, which received the Service to America Medal in 2005. She also directed the development of Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid’s (caBIG) Cancer Molecular Analysis portal at NCI, which is the first web portal for integrating and analyzing the Cancer Genome Atlas datasets.

Madhavan holds a doctorate in molecular biology from the Uniformed Services University for Health Sciences as part of an Indo-US graduate collaborative program as well as a master’s degree in computer information systems from the University of Maryland.
