Senate Foreign Relations Committee to Hold Hearings Thursday on the Law of the Sea Convention
Sep-24-07 10:44 am
![]() The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be holding a hearing on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea his Thursday, September 27 at 2:30PM in Room 419 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The witnesses will be John D. Negroponte, Deputy Secretary of State, Gordon England, Deputy Secretary of Defense, and Admiral Patrick M. Walsh, Vice Chief of Naval Operations. Another hearing will be held in October with witnesses from the private sector and the NGO community. This is a good step toward ultimate ratification of the Convention-- something that many previous posts have advocated. As reminder, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has already held hearings on the Convention-- in October of 2003. And after those hearings, the Committee voted unanimously to recommend advice and consent to the Convention. I hope the Committee replicates this vote and that the Convention can move swiftly to the full Senate for a similarly positive vote.
