New York Times is reporting this evening:
A day after President Bush called, Gen. Pervez Musharraf said Thursday that Pakistan’s parliamentary elections would be held before Feb. 15, even as his security forces widened their crackdown and jailed hundreds of opposition party members before a rally planned for Friday.
In making the lone concession, General Musharraf, Pakistan’s president, appears to have calculated that it would be enough to defuse his opposition here and to satisfy the White House, which called the general’s announcement of an election timetable a “good thing.”
I'm not sure this announcement will have any effect on his opposition. And I'm convinced that many don't believe that he'll follow through on this promise anyway.
